Once you have passed your citizenship test and had your application for citizenship accepted you will receive a letter of invitation from either your local council or the department. Ceremonies are usually organised within six months of an application being approved.
It is very important that you attend your citizenship ceremony as you will not receive your certificate of citizenship or be an Australian citizen until you do.
If you need to change the date of your ceremony the department can generally accommodate you but you will need to let the department know as soon as possible.
Urgent ceremonies can be organised more quickly if there is demonstrable need, although this is only done in limited circumstances and supporting evidence of the need must be provided. For more information contact the DIAC.
