What documents should you prepare before your application?

Applicants will need supporting documents that prove their identity and their good character. Supporting evidence is also required for any special requirements or considerations such as documents relating to children or medical conditions.

Identity documents

To prove your identity you are required to show 3 sets of original documentation which feature the following information:

• a photograph of you
• your signature
• your current residential address
• your date of birth, birth name and any changes of name

Examples of these include your original passport, an Australian driving license or a national identity card.

You will also need to provide a signature of approval from an Australian citizen who works in a designated occupation, has known you for over a year and is not related to you by birth or marriage.

If permanent residency is a requirement of your application you will also need to provide proof of the date of your arrival to Australia.

Character documents

If you are over 18 years of age you will need to provide overseas police checks from every country you have lived in to demonstrate your good character. You must declare any convictions - current or spent - you have as if they come to light in the course of your application this will damage the chances of your application being approved.

Supporting evidence

Supporting evidence may be required in a range of situations, such as:

• to claim exemption from the residence requirement
• to provide evidence that your parent was an Australian citizen
• to provide evidence that you changed your name.
